Student Blog: Emelyn Broniek

Emelyn Broniek has always been intrigued by art and the history behind it, so much so that in high school, she decided to make the commitment to an AP Art History course of study. After exploring numerous summer programs that would allow her to pursue her passion, this Pennsylvania resident chose the NYU SPS HS Academy Career Edge program in Art History.

Emelyn found the Art History: New York's Masterpieces class fascinating and highly interactive. From dressing up as subjects in paintings to bring the underlying story of the art to life, to conducting research on a large-scale exhibit and writing about it, to exploring the art in world-renowned museums, she couldn't have asked for a more comprehensive and stimulating learning experience.

Being exposed to the masterpieces at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, learning about the techniques and motivations of contemporary artists at MoMA, and viewing and analyzing the Judy Chicago exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum, made her sure of wanting to pursue a career in the field.

On a trip to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), students got to see and analyze one of the world's most famous paintings—Vincent Van Gogh's "The Starry Night."
My instructor was so knowledgeable and was able to point out the most minute details in the paintings we explored. Her passion for art history has encouraged me to pursue it as a career.

As an art historian, who is intimately familiar with NYC museums and the art within them, Emily Sacher encourages her students to become part of the art they are studying, gaining insight into the the intensions of the artist and the inspiration for the subject matter.

For a class project, Emelyn completed an analysis of one of the plates she had seen in the Judy Chicago exhibit, "The Dinner Party," at the Brooklyn Museum.
